Zhongyan Cao

Zhongyan Cao is a pianist, pedagogue, and researcher with a performance career spanning the United States, China, and beyond. His recitals feature a diverse repertoire, including works Beethoven, Liszt, Prokofiev, Scriabin, and Say. Complementing his stage presence, Cao has contributed to music research through analytical studies on composers such as Tchaikovsky, Franck, Schubert, and Debussy.

His extensive teaching background includes leading children’s music education programs in Beijing, preparing students for ABRSM examinations, and guiding prize-winning students in international competitions. Beyond the bench, Cao has served as an organizer and web designer for the International Classical Music Alliance, combining musical expertise with technical skills to support international faculty and students.

Cao holds a Master of Music in Piano Performance from the University of Michigan, where he studied under Professor Arthur Greene, and a Bachelor of Music in Music Education and Performance from the Tianjin Conservatory of Music.

Currently, Zhongyan Cao is a DMA pianist and pedagogue at the University of Kansas. His work in Piano Pedagogy and Performance is guided the artistic mentorship of Priscila Navarro and informed specialized pedagogical training under Scott McBride Smith and Ivy Lu Wang. As President of the KU MTNA Collegiate Chapter, he leads initiatives to foster professional development and pedagogical excellence among his colleagues. A recipient of the Wilma R. Miller Piano Scholarship, his achievements also include a Silver Award in the IPPA International Piano Competition (U.S. Division, Midwest).
