Dr. Wang I Ta

Piano Faculty at University of Malaysia

Born in Taiwan, Dr. Wang I Ta began his piano studies at the age of ten. He received formal training at the National Taiwan Normal University (BA) under Prof. Lina Yeh, the Peabody Conservatory of Johns Hopkins University (MM) under Prof. Boris Slutsky, and the University of Minnesota (DMA) under Prof. Alexander Braginsky.

Dr. Wang is a recipient of the Rising Star Award from the National Concert Hall in Taiwan, as well as the Hutchinson Scholarship (University of Minnesota) and the Rosenberg Scholarship (Peabody Conservatory). He has won several competitions, including the Schubert Club Music Competition, the Walnut Hill Concerto Competition, and the Eleanor Bell Watson Competition.

He has also participated in and performed at prestigious festivals such as the TCU/Cliburn Piano Institute (now Piano Texas), the International New York Keyboard Festival, and the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory International Summer School. As a soloist, he has collaborated with orchestras including the KLPAC Orchestra, Camerata Youth Orchestra, UM Symphony Orchestra, Hunan Symphony Orchestra, and Longwood Symphony Orchestra. His performance series in Taiwan have been supported the National Culture and Arts Foundation.

In addition to his performance activities, Dr. Wang is an active juror at numerous local and international events, including the Hamamatsu PIARA Piano Competition (Taiwan Preliminary), Singapore International Competition (Malaysia Preliminary), Singapore Raffles International Music Festival, Hong Kong-Asia Piano Open Competition, Sandakan International Music Festival, Muar Youth Piano Competition, Gold Star International Music Competition, and East United International Music Competition.

His students have achieved notable success in competitions such as the Southeast Asia (SEA) Piano Competition, Hong Kong-Asia Piano Open Competition, Aswara International Piano Competition, Malaysian Piano Competition, Euroasia Youth Music Festival, UCSI National Music Competition, the Yamaha Scholarship Malaysia, and the Taiwan National Music Competition.

Dr. Wang currently serves as Senior Lecturer and Program Coordinator for Undergraduate Studies at the Music Department, Faculty of Creative Arts, Universiti Malaya. His teaching and research interests include piano performance, pedagogy, and mindfulness.
