STEPHEN SIEK has concertized extensively throughout America, and he made his London debut in 1988. For over thirty years he served as a professor of music at Wittenberg University in Springfield, Ohio, where he taught not only piano, but music history, American music, the aesthetics of music, and film music. He has also performed and lectured at piano conferences throughout the world for organizations such as the Historical Keyboard Society of America and the American Liszt Society, and in July of 2015 he performed in Glasgow at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland for an international conference devoted to Music in Nineteenth-Century Britain. He has released an acclaimed recording of The Philadelphia Sonatas of Alexander Reinagle (c. 1750-1809) on the Titanic label, and a selection from that disc may be accessed here. A former president of the American Matthay Association, Dr. Siek is considered an expert on the teachings of British pianist Tobias Matthay, and is the author of England’s Piano Sage: The Life and Teachings of Tobias Matthay, published Scarecrow Press in 2012. He holds bachelor of music and master of music degrees in piano from the University of Maryland, where he studied with Stewart Gordon, and his additional piano studies were undertaken with Donald Hageman, Frank Mannheimer, and Denise Lassimonne. He also holds a Ph.D. in musicology from the College-Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati. A well-known adjudicator in many competitions, he most recently served as a judge for the Steinway/Avanti Future Stars Competition, held in February 2017 at Arizona State University.
