2024 IPPA Piano Pedagogy Conference

Innovation, creativity and internationalization are the themes of the 2024 IPPA Piano Pedagogy Conference. Exchange ideas with other teachers, scholars, pre-college students and higher education faculty in hands-on sessions sharing insight and growth. It aims to present practical and down-to-earth guidance for your daily teaching and practicing. We recognize excellent teachers and appreciate their great teaching efforts. We want to hear your insights and wisdom on piano teaching.
The 1st edition of the IPPA Piano Pedagogy Conference will be hosted by IPPA (International Piano Professionals Association). Under the leadership of world-class piano pedagogue Dr. Scott McBride Smith, it is dedicated to advancing the piano profession through piano competitions, pedagogy symposiums, workshops, concerts, teacher training, piano masterclasses and the fostering of international piano exchange programs at the University of Kansas School of Music, which is known for its strong piano pedagogy program.

What is included in each program?
Access to all masterclasses, workshops, pedagogy lectures, symposiums, and discussion panels is available. You are cordially invited to apply to give a presentation, join the panel as a guest speaker, perform in the Teachers Showcase Recital, as well as share your teaching wisdom with this community. Selected proposals will receive a $100 honorary discount.
This program is open for piano students under 18 years old, looking for performance, masterclasses and creative activities in this conference. Attendees will receive:
- Participate in one open masterclass
- Performance class (gain stage experience and confidence)
- Improvisation Workshop – enhance creativity
- Feature in the Student Honor Recital in Swarthout Recital Hall
- Extra private lessons available to apply after the competition
There are limited spots in this program; reservations are made on a first-come-first-served basis.

This workshop is designed for pianists seeking strategies for planning their future piano careers. The aim of this workshop is to assist you in shaping the development of your professional profile. Activities include:
1 One on One instruction on writing a professional cover letter and CV
2 Writing Teaching Philosophy
3 Participating in a simulated interview with faculty and receiving one-on-one feedback
4 Engaging in one on one career development discussions with faculty
5 OPT and O-1 Visa applying planning and strategies for international students
All attendees can apply additional private lessons with conference faculty. Please reach out our staff for your request.
Detailed information about this conference
In addition to attending events, conference-goers can participate as a Pedagogy Presenter as well. Presenters will be promoted world wide (posters, social media, etc.).
Deadline for application to be a Pedagogy Presenter is June 10th, 2024. Please include:
The title of the proposed paper; 200-300word abstract;100-word biography; institutional affiliation or independent scholar status; and your contact information.
Presentation lengths:
45-minute presentations are open for young professionals, individual piano teachers with 10 years of experience, as well as college and university piano faculty to apply. 25-minute presentations are open for collegiate piano students to apply. There will be 5 minutes allocated for Q&A at the end for each session. The conference will provide necessary facilities such as projectors or pianos to accommodate the presentations.
All presenters are required to register for the conference. Selected proposals will receive a $100 honorary discount.

- Refund Policy: Before June 10th, 50% of program fees and 50% of KU housing fees are refundable. After June 10th, 2024, both program fees and KU housing fees will not be refundable.
