Dr. Priyeshni Peiris is an international award-winning Performing Teaching Artist, currently on faculty at the University of Hartford. Upon graduating with a Doctor of Musical Arts (DMA) in Piano Pedagogy from TTU – USA, she returned to her native – Sri Lanka, to foster music education, where she pioneered, internationally recognized music programs at the Prestantia community Music School and also as a Senior Lecturer at the University of Visual and Performing Arts in Sri Lanka. Her students have continuously won several accolades and Gold medals at the British Music Festivals as well as “international High Scorer award.

Topic: A Pedagogical Tool to Develop Musical Expression through the Application of Juslin’s GERMS Model to 20th Century Intermediate/Early Advanced level Piano Music.
This lecture-recital is based on the GERMS model, found in music performance psychology, which conceptualizes “musical expression” as a multi-dimensional phenomenon. An innovative Pedagogical tool, designed to visualize aspects of emotional expression is applied to 20th century piano music literature, which will be presented with strategies to help students understand ways to enhance musical cues in expression. The carefully selected piano repertoire for Intermediate/advanced Levels will be showcased with demonstrations through the applications of the “pedagogical tool” with concrete teaching ideas to develop musical/emotional expression in Piano students.
